Dr. Richard Pan’s Statement on Federal Agents Killing Minneapolis Nurse
Sacramento, CA — Dr. Richard Pan, pediatrician and former State Senator running for Congress, issued the following statement after ICE agents shot and killed Alex Pretti, a registered nurse, in Minneapolis yesterday.
“I am horrified to see U.S. federal government agents in ICE callously kill an American exercising his Constitutional rights” said Dr. Pan. “As a physician, I worked to save lives and protect public safety. Alex Pretti was an ICU nurse who cared for veterans and helped people in his community, described by his colleagues as a ‘force for good’.”
“The United States should be a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law,” Dr. Pan continued. “President Trump, Secretary Noem and ICE agents must be held fully accountable when they violate the Constitution and the law. Federal agents killing Americans must be independently investigated and, if found to violate the law, face prosecution and a jury.”
Dr. Pan said that Congress must act urgently to end violent attacks on Americans by our own government. “Trump has destroyed ICE as a responsible federal agency. ICE should be abolished and replaced by a new agency and personnel who respect and follow the Constitution and the rule of law, enforce the law fairly without loss of life, and accept responsibility for their actions by cooperating with independent investigations and Congressional oversight. Until this happens, Congress must exert its Constitutional authority by withholding funding for ICE, demanding full and transparent investigations into killings and detentions of Americans by ICE agents including cooperating with investigations by local law enforcement, and removing ICE agents from locations where requested by state and local authorities.”
