Dr. Richard Pan Statement on Taiwan
Sacramento, CA — Dr. Richard Pan released the following statement:
“It is in the national interest of the United States to support freedom, democracy, and human rights in Asia including Taiwan. The United States has long supported Taiwan through the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances. These commitments have helped maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and it is critical that we continue to uphold them.
The United States must be clear and consistent in its commitment to Taiwan. Any suggestion that American support is conditional or transactional undermines U.S. credibility, weakens our national security, and risks emboldening the Chinese Communist Party.
Taiwan is a vital democratic partner and plays a key role in maintaining security and stability across the Indo-Pacific. Our relationship spans security cooperation, economic partnership, and global engagement, and United States policy should encourage greater engagement with Taiwan and Taiwan’s full international participation. It is essential that the United States support the self determination of the Taiwanese people in the face of increasing pressure from Beijing.
I stand with Taiwan and support a strong, consistent U.S. commitment to its security and democratic future. In Congress, I will work to strengthen our partnership, and promote peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
